Export and import activities between Bangladesh and India through the Benapole land port remained suspended for the second day since Tuesday morning, as Border Security Force (BSF) did not allow C&F agents to enter India.
As a result, thousands of goods-laden trucks remained stranded on both sides of the port.
Hasanuzzaman Tanzim, organizing secretary of C&F Association of Benapole Land Port, said export and import activities remained suspended after BSF obstructed C&F agents when they were entering Petrapole with documents.
However, the movement of passengers between the two countries and other activities of the port remained uninterrupted, he added.
Bangladeshi truck drivers at Benapole port said at least 500 trucks remained stranded and were waiting for clearance into Petrapole land port on Wednesday.
Aminul Haque, vice president of Benapole Import Export Association, said although the land port is controlled by Bangladesh Customs and Land Port authorities, the Indian Petropole is controlled by BSF personnel, which is why they do not consult with us before taking such decisions.
Abdul Jalil, deputy director at Benapole port, said such a sudden decision by the Indian authorities was irrational.
They were trying to negotiate with their Indian counterparts to resume import-export activities, he added.
Uttam Chakma, assistant commissioner of the Customs House, said they initially assumed that the reason could be American President Donald Trump’s India visit, for which security along the border has been tightened.
India imports 300 to 500 trucks of goods through Benapole port and exports from 150 to 200 trucks.
Imported products include raw materials, manufactured garments, and food items.
Jute and jute products are notable in export products.
The government annually receives about Tk5,000 crore in revenue from the port.
If one day’s trade is closed, revenue collection of at least Tk15 crore is affected, traders said.
