Update : 30 Aug 2019, 12:17 AM

Solidarity Center (SC) in partnership with Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation (SGSF) and Akota Garments Workers Federation (AGWF) have provided assistance to over 175 union worker families affected by the Mirpur slum fire yesterday.

“Thousands of garment workers have been affected by this fire. Because wages and benefits are still so low for most garment workers they are sometimes forced to live in slum like conditions where fire and building safety is often an afterthought.

“Unions are working hard to change this situation overall, but right now are focused on helping families rebuild after this terrible tragedy," Jon Hartough, Solidarity Centre Bangladesh country program director said.

Shima, a SGSF union worker who lost her house in the fire said: "We are happy to have assistance from our union during this difficult time. Having our co-workers, Solidarity Center, and the union stand by us has given us the strength and support we need to rebuild."

Solidarity Centre would also be coordinating with other NGOs to ensure that union families get assistance in this difficult time.

Kamrul Hasan, General Secretary of AGWF also spoke at the time.

Jon Hartough, CPD of Solidarity Center, Ehteshmul Haque, head of HR of Armana Group, Nazma Akter, president of SGSF, Nahidul Islam Noyon, general Secretary of SGSF were present at the time, among others.
