The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across all eight divisions over the next 24 hours and warned of possible landslides in the hilly areas of the Chittagong division.
According to a BMD bulletin issued on Friday, heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions from 10am Friday through the following 24 hours.
The bulletin said rainfall may total between 44mm and 88mm in 24 hours, while very heavy rainfall exceeding 88mm may occur in some places.
It warned that the heavy rain could cause temporary waterlogging in parts of the Dhaka and Chittagong metropolitan areas and trigger landslides in some hilly areas of the Chittagong division.
The Met Office said the well-marked low-pressure area over northwestern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas has weakened into a low-pressure area over north-central Uttar Pradesh and adjoining regions and is likely to weaken further.
It said the monsoon trough extends through Punjab, Haryana, the center of the low-pressure area, Bihar, West Bengal, central Bangladesh, and Assam, with one extension extending to the North Bay of Bengal.
According to the bulletin, the monsoon remains active over Bangladesh and strong over the North Bay of Bengal.
The BMD also said rainfall is likely to continue in different parts of the country over the next five days.
