US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and US ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar on Friday to assess the humanitarian situation of displaced Myanmar nationals.
The 11-member delegation arrived at Cox's Bazar airport at 11:55 am before travelling directly to the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya. The delegation also included the US ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen.
According to the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), the delegation inspected the World Food Programme's (WFP) humanitarian operations at Camp 4 in Ukhiya. The itinerary also included visits to Extended Camp 8 West (8W) and Camp 6.
During the visit, the delegation observed the living conditions of the Rohingya refugees, ongoing humanitarian assistance programmes and the overall conditions in the camps. They are also expected to review the activities of humanitarian agencies working there.
The delegation is scheduled to meet officials at the RRRC office in Cox's Bazar at 5:00 pm to exchange views on the Rohingya response.
Gor arrived in Dhaka on Thursday on a three-day official visit. His trip is scheduled to conclude on Saturday with a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
