Bangladesh has reiterated that the only sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis is the swift repatriation of the displaced population to Myanmar.
It also said that hosting around 1.2 million Rohingya for nearly a decade is no longer sustainable for Bangladesh, while noting that the displaced community itself wants to return home.
Speaking at a briefing by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar on Friday, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury said the crisis originated in Myanmar and must be resolved there. He said the prolonged presence of the Rohingya has created significant social, economic, environmental and security pressures on Bangladesh.
Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to a peaceful resolution, he called on international partners to intensify diplomatic engagement to create a conducive environment for the early repatriation of the Rohingya to Myanmar.
