The interim government is stressing the need for a conducive environment in Rakhine for the repatriation of Rohingyas.

"Efforts are underway to ensure that the Rohingyas can return with guaranteed rights and security," said Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Tuesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He continued: “We all know the ground realities in Rakhine state. In the current situation, repatriation of the Rohingyas is not possible. We are now urging all parties to focus on creating a supportive environment across the border, so that these people can return with rights and security.”

Regarding the verification of a list of 180,000 Rohingyas, he said: “We wanted the confirmation to come from them directly, and they have confirmed it. Out of 250,000 people proposed for repatriation, 180,000 have been confirmed.”

Touhid added: “Previously, a list of 800,000 was submitted, but there was no clear response regarding that. We were stuck at 40,000. Now, out of 250,000, 180,000 have been confirmed, and the remaining 70,000 are under review.

"We have urged that the verification of the additional 700,000 to 800,000 Rohingyas be expedited.”

However, he clarified that this confirmation does not mean they can return home immediately.
