3 Rohingya workers die in Cox’s Bazar landslide

The mountain collapsed while they were cutting it illegally

Three Rohingya workers were killed in a landslide at Ukhiya in Cox's Bazar. 

The mountain collapsed while they were cutting it illegally in Muhuripara area of Ukhiya Sadar at around 6am on Wednesday. 

The deceased are Zahid Hossain, 23, son of Abdul Motaleb, resident of Ukhia 1-East Rohingya camp, Chayed Akbar, 20, son of Mohammad Wares, resident of Camp-1 Block-B 1 Rohingya camp, and Noor Kabir, 22, son of Soltan Ahmad of H Block of Camp 17.

Ukhiya police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Sheikh Mohammad Ali confirmed the information.

According to witnesses and locals, a group of Rohingya workers were cutting and levelling the hill of Neshar Ahmed's house. At one stage of cutting the soil, when the hill in the yard of Neshar Ahmed's house above collapsed, two workers were buried on the ground. 

On receiving the information, the locals rescued one person dead. Later, when the fire service and police arrived at the spot, the bodies of three people were recovered.

Emdadul Haque, station in-charge of Ukhiya Fire Service and Civil Defence, engaged in the rescue operation, said that three bodies have been recovered from the landslide. The rescue operation is continuing to see if there were any other people buried under the ground of the mountain.

Ukhiya police station OC Sheikh Mohammad Ali said that the bodies of the deceased have been brought to Ukhiya police station. From there it will be sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Legal action will be taken in this regard.
