Mozammel: Rohingyas are threat to Bangladesh's law and order

Due to Rohingyas’ non-citizen status, it becomes difficult to arrest them under the existing legal framework, says the minister

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq expressed concerns over the impact of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar on the law and order situation in Bangladesh.

“Rohingyas were engaged in drug peddling through using Myanmar SIM cards. They are unruly and becoming threat to the law enforcement agencies. Our existing law is not enough to control them,” he added.

During a meeting held at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he emphasized that Rohingyas exhibit a reluctance to comply with established laws and regulations, making it challenging to enforce control over them.

Following the meeting, Mozammel Huq shared this information with journalists in a briefing held at the home ministry conference room.

Highlighting the complexities associated with addressing the Rohingya issue, AKM Mozammel Huq noted that due to their non-citizen status, it becomes difficult to arrest Rohingyas under the existing legal framework and subsequently prosecute them.

He also pointed out that the involvement of foreign organizations sometimes creates obstacles in taking necessary action.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also present at the meeting.
