9 Rohingyas fleeing Bhashan Char detained in Mirsharai

Among those fleeing three were children

Local people have detained 9 Rohingya women, children and men in Mirsarai in Chittagong and handed them over to the police.

They were arrested from Kheyarghat area of Shaherkhali union of the upazila at 9:30am on Thursday.

The arrestees were identified as Mohammad Nayan, 22, Mohammad Anis, 14, Fatema Begum, 60, Humaira, 30, Rozina Akter, 19, Ekramul Haque, 6, Zahidul Islam, 2, Yasin, 1 and Aziza Bibi, 18.

According to the locals, a group of Rohingyas crossed Sandwip Channel in the Bay of Bengal in a trawler on Thursday morning. The locals caught them and informed the police. Later, Mirsarai police went to the spot, arrested nine Rohingya women, children and men and brought them to the police station.

Mirsarai Police Inspector (investigation) Dinesh Das Gupta said locals apprehended the Rohingyas on Thursday morning and informed the police. Among the detainees are three children, four women and two men. 

“We went to the spot at 12 noon, arrested them and brought them to the police station. We have been noticing that Rohingyas are fleeing from Bhasan Char at random,” he said. 

“We are trying to find out who is helping the Rohingyas to escape from Bhashan Char,” he added.
