The Rohingyas have become a threat to the security, socioeconomic conditions and environment of the country.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Momen made the remarks while jointly releasing a postage stamp with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama at a virtual event on Thursday.

The postal department of Nigeria has released a memorial postage stamp on the occasion of the ongoing birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Dr Momen requested Nigeria to play a strong role at the United Nations and other international forums to force Myanmar to stop its oppression against the Rohingyas and to ensure their return home.

Speaking on the occasion, the foreign minister thanked the Nigerian government for its initiative towards making the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation a memorable event.

This kind of initiative would further deepen and strengthen the ties between the two countries, he said.

Nigeria was the largest economy in Africa and both Dhaka and Abuja were working on signing memorandums of understanding on agriculture, education, defence and avoidance of double taxation, said the minister.

The Nigerian foreign minister said that both countries would be benefited through mutual cooperation.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen were also present.

A short video on the life and work of Bangabandhu was shown on the occasion.
