Update : 14 Nov 2016, 12:42 AM
He directed the officials of the Roads and Highways Department, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, Titas Gas Company and Bapex while attending a joint meeting at the Bangladesh secretariat to resolve the complexity in constructing the pipeline yesterday. Mir Moshiur Rahman, Managing Director of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited who attended the meeting told the Dhaka Tribune: “The Roads and Highways Department agreed to cooperate in constructing the pipeline and they also assured to complete the work as early as possible.” He also said: “Already two-kilometer pipeline work had been finished and if the remaining four kilometers are done soon then by the middle of December we hope to add gas to the national grid.” More than two and a half years have passed since the Rupganj gas field in Narayanganj was discovered but the gas is yet to be added to the national grid from the field because of bureaucratic bottleneck. The gas field discovered by the State-owned Petrobangla’s exploration wing Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (Bapex) could supply 10 million cubic feet of gas with which a 50 megawatt (MW) power plant could be powered or around 100 large scale industries could be operated, said an official from Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited. Industry insiders said gas from Rupganj gas field could have solved the existing gas crisis in Narayanganj industrial area where many of the gas driven industries are suffering with limited gas supply. The authorities plan to set up a 6km-long gas transmission line to feed it to the national grid. Sources in the Energy and Mineral Resources Division said even though all other works of the project has been completed without much hassles, the construction of pipeline is yet to be completed as its is awaiting permission from the Roads and Highway Department. Titas Gas needs permission from the Roads and Highway Department as the gas field is located near Purbachal area and to construct gas pipe line from there, permission from the Roads and Highway Department is needed because the line will be constructed within the jurisdiction of the Roads and Highway Division Department.
