Gas supply to the industrial sector rose 21% in the first four months of this year from the same period last year, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division says

Despite the ongoing gas supply crisis, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division has said that more gas has been supplied to industries this year compared to the same period last year.

The information was shared in a press release issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Monday.

According to the release, gas supply to the industrial sector rose by 21% during the first four months of this year compared to the corresponding period last year.

The division noted that between January and April last year, an average of 823 million cubic feet of gas was supplied daily to industries. This year, the average daily supply during the same period increased to 997 million cubic feet.

"The supply is gradually being increased further. Notably, in April this year alone, gas supply rose by nearly 50% compared to April last year. While the average daily supply in April 2024 was 726 million cubic feet, it rose to 1.088 billion cubic feet in April 2025."

Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) provided further clarification in a statement released by the Energy Division.

It said: “Petrobangla has taken note of misleading remarks made by representatives of industry-related associations regarding gas supply to industrial units, as reported in various newspapers.”

In response, Petrobangla said that to boost gas supply to industries, six additional cargos of liquefied natural gas (LNG) were imported this year compared to last year.

It added: “The import cost of LNG stands at Tk65 per cubic metre, while industries are charged Tk30 per cubic metre, and Tk31.50 per cubic metre in cases where gas is used for captive power generation. This means the government is subsidising Tk35 per cubic metre for the additional gas supply.”

From May 28, an additional 150 million cubic feet of gas per day will be added to the supply, according to the division.

The press release further mentioned that the government remains committed to ensuring gas supply to industries and has taken prompt measures in this regard. It expressed hope that all confusion surrounding the issue would be cleared up soon.
