Bangladesh, World Bank sign 300m loan deal to finance gas meter project

  • Project aims to install 1,228,000 prepaid gas meters
  • State minister expresses energy sector to play pivotal role

The Economic Relations Division (ERD) has finalized a $300 million loan agreement with the World Bank to fund the prepaid gas meter project.

Economic Relations Division Secretary Sharifa Khan and World Bank Country Director Abdoulaye Seck signed the loan agreement on Thursday.

The project aims to install 1,228,000 prepaid gas meters, with 1.1 million meters designated for 30% of residential customers of Titas Gas and 128,000 prepaid meters for residential customers of Western Gas Company.

In this context, Minister of State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid expressed that the energy sector will play a pivotal role in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's vision for a Smart Bangladesh through the installation of smart prepaid gas meters. 

He further emphasized the increased integration of technology in the power and energy sectors in the future.
