Six wells at the gas filed was shut down as sand was found in one of them

Update : 07 Apr 2022, 03:26 PM

Another well at the Bibiyana gas field has started production, adding another 70 million cubic feet of gas to the national grid.

With the latest development, gas extraction from five out of the six wells damaged recently has started, reports Bangla Tribune.

The addition to the gas supply is expected to resolve the gas crisis that has been prevalent in the country since Sunday, the first day of Ramadan.

On Sunday night, sand was found in one of the wells in Bibiyana gas field forcing the authorities to shut down extraction in six wells.

By Tuesday, four of the wells had been repaired and started gas production.

With 22 wells, the Bibiyana Gas Field can produce 1,200 million cubic feet of gas.

According to people familiar with the matter, the 450 million cubic feet gas crisis could have been avoided if PetroBangla had a sufficient supply of LNG (liquified natural gas).

Households were not the only ones affected by the gas crisis. Vehicles suffered as the filling stations could not supply either.

A Chevron employee said that it is being investigated why sand was found in one of the wells.

Meanwhile, nearly 500 million cubic feet of gas will be added to the grid by 9pm as an LNG cargo has reached Moheskhali on Thursday morning, says Petro Bangla.

According to state-owned Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited’s Deputy General Manager Mohammad Saifullah Kabir although the LNG cargo has reached, it cannot be unloaded due to the waves.

“We expect the regasification to be complete by 8 or 9pm and add it to the grid,” he said.
