Momen, senior Foreign Ministry officials visit Rooppur nuclear plant

Aim of visit to enable diplomats to communicate with international community regarding safety and other aspects

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and senior officials of the Foreign Ministry have visited the Rooppur nuclear power plant with the aim of familiarizing the country's diplomats with the project.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and senior officials -- director generals and above -- participated in the visit that took place on Friday and Saturday, according to the Foreign Ministry on Monday.

The director of the project, being constructed with the help of Russia, apprised the visitors of different aspects of the plant.

The Foreign Ministry is actively involved with the project. Communications are maintained with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through Bangladesh's missions in Vienna, Austria and Moscow, Russia.

The visit will help Bangladeshi diplomats communicate with the international community in relation to different aspects of the project, including implementation and safety.

Also, the diplomats will be able to raise the issue of using nuclear energy positively in the international domain. 

Foreign Minister Momen said that Bangladesh is in favour of using nuclear technology for good causes and proper use of the technology through this project will enhance the image of the country.

Yeafesh Osman, science and technology minister, and senior officials of his ministry were also present during the visit.
