Afroza: Mirza Abbas should be granted bail

Update : 11 Apr 2015, 01:08 PM

BNP backed DSCC mayoral candidate Mirza Abbas should be granted bail for organising fair election, Mirza Abbas's wife Afroza Abbas has said.

Afroza made the demand during the campaign in capital's Segunbagicha and Topkhana area at 11am on Saturday.

She regretted over absence of her husband, saying: “Running campaign on behalf of Abbas is not same like the candidate to seek votes physically to the voters.”

She said: “The government says they want to have a competitive election. In that case, they must grant bail to Mirza Abbas, our councillor candidates and supporters who will campaign for us.”

Mirza Abbas, who is running in the DSCC polls with the symbol of 'mug' symbol, is accused in 16 cases and remained in hideaway for last couple of months to avoid arrest, and hence, has't so far appeared publicly for campaign.

His wife who is leading the campaign for him said: “Even so I have seen his (Abbas) huge acceptance to the voters of Dhaka South during continuing campaign since April 8.”

Afroza also said voters expect to meet their candidates.

However, expecting her husband's win in the mayoral race despite Abbas' hideaway, Afroza also said: “Remaining in hideaway will not be any fact for Abbas as he is so much popular in Dhaka area. He always keep himself connected with the supporters and updated about the city polls in his fugitive situation.”

“The people will answer through ballot box,” Afroza said.

Pointing to the major rival in the mayoral race, Sayeed Khokon, Afroza also alleged to the reporters that the ruling party-backed candidates and supporters are continuously violating electoral code of conduct, but the election commission remain silent to take action against ruling party's leaders or activists.
