Bobby Hajjaj, former special adviser to Jatiya Party chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad, has withdrawn his candidacy from Dhaka North City Corporation polls as an independent mayoral candidate.
Jubi Musa, the younger brother of the politician, on behalf of Bobby, withdrew his candidacy from the office of Dhaka North Returning Officer around 4pm Thursday.
Later in the day, while briefing the media, Bobby said: “I have decided to quit the city polls as I think that the election commission failed to create a level-playing field for all candidates.”
“Moreover, a specific political party top brasses are creating pressure on my supporters and followers for leaving my side.”
He also said: “There are two reasons for contesting the polls. Firstly, this is a non-partisan election where parties cannot directly back any candidate. Secondly, I was born in this city and I want to make Dhaka as I have dreamt.”
Earlier on March 22, the son of businessman Musa Bin Shamsher, collected his nomination form to contest in the city polls.
On March 21, he made the announcement of contesting the polls at his Banani office in the capital.
