The Election Commission has asked three mayoral candidates and 17 councillor candidates in the Chittagong City Corporation election to "show cause" for violating the electoral code of conduct.
They were asked to place written reply to the notices in appearance at the CCC office by April 5, CCC Returning Officer Md Abdul Baten told the Dhaka Tribune.
The EC issued the notices to mayor candidates M Manjur Alam, the outgoing mayor, AJM Nasir Uddin, Awami League-backed candidate, and Jatiya Party-supported candidate Solaiman Alam Sheikh.
Manzur set camp office for the polls, Nasir posted banner on roadsides and Solaiman delivered posters and set camp office violating electoral rolls, said the returning officer.
Also, 17 candidates for councillor were asked to show cause as to why charges should not be pressed against them for violating the electoral code for starting their election campaigns before due time, the returning officer said.
Baten said campaigning by candidates or anyone supporting them more than 21 days before the election was a violation of the code of conduct for city corporation elections.
