BNP: No fair, peaceful symptoms yet visible for polls

Update : 25 Mar 2015, 02:27 PM

Symptoms for holding Dhaka and Chittagong City Corporations polls in free, fair and peaceful way is not visible yet though call was made to BNP and other political parties to participate in the polls, the BNP-led 20-party alliance has alleged.

Barkatullah Bulu, joint secretary general of the party, made the allegation at a press release issued on Wednesday.

“Announcement of holding elections in three city corporations is nothing but a mockery with the people of the country through the election commission,” said Bulu.

Branding the election commission subservient to the government, Bulu also said: “The election commission means the government is going to stage a cheating electoral drama in the local government system like the January 5 election.”

The BNP leader alleged that if the election commission has will to make the election acceptable to all the parties and people of the country, then election schedule would not be announced in this month following the advice of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

He asked the government to withdraw all the “false and politically motivated” cases filed against the opposition leaders and activists to withdraw immediately as securing bail is a constitutional right of a citizen.
