Update : 23 Mar 2015, 01:37 PM

Former BNP lawmaker Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu, who is a life convict in the BDR carnage case, has collected a nomination form to join the upcoming Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral race.

Although the BNP is yet to make any formal announcement over participating in the upcoming polls, the former Jatiyatabadi Chhatradal president bought the nomination form on Monday afternoon.

One Rafiqul Islam, who identified himself as the lawyer of the convicted politician, collected the nomination paper from the office of the returning officer for Dhaka South City Corporation.

Returning Officer Mihir Sarwar Morshed, also the regional election officer of Dhaka, told the journalists: “Pintu has collected the nomination paper through his lawyer. The candidates will be selected after final scrutiny.”

Asked whether a convict can bought the nomination form, he said anyone can collect it.

The Election Commission has fixed April 28 for holding the polls in Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong City Corporations.

The deadline for submitting the papers is March 29. Scrutiny will be done on April 1 and 2 and the last date for withdrawal is April 9.

On November 5, 2013, Pintu and Awami League leader Torab Ali have been awarded life-term imprisonment for their involvement in the BDR carnage in 2009.

The court also fined him Tk500,000. Later in January, 2014, the convict filed an appeal with the High Court, challenging his conviction in the BDR carnage case.

Pintu is now in jail.
