Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna’s wife and daughter met him at Dhaka Central Jail yesterday, a day after he was shifted there from Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Manna, who was suffering from blood pressure and cardiac problem, is under care of the central Jail hospital.
The jail authorities permitted Manna’s wife Meher Nigar and daughter Niloy Manna to meet him around 2pm.
Nesar Ahmed, the jail superintendent, said Manna’s wife and daughter were allowed to meet him for half an hour. During their visit they enquired about Manna’s physical condition.
Manna’s daughter Niloy Manna over cell phone said her father’s physical condition deteriorated. He is hardly able to walk.
He was supposed to undergo NGO gram and MRI tests as were suggested by his doctors but he was taken back to jail without those two tests, added Niloy Manna.
On Thursday evening Manna was sent to jail. Manna was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on March 10, three days into his second spell of the 10-day remand in a sedition case filed with Gulshan police station.
Earlier, Manna was placed on a 10-day remand on February 25 in a case filed for inciting revolt in the army to grab state power.
Manna was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion on February 24 around 10:50pm and later handed over to the Detective Branch of police.
About Manna’s remand Mahfuzul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of DB police, said they had appealed to the court concerned for the continuation of the remand but the court is yet to give any decision.
Everything now depends on the court decision, he added.
