'Khaleda burning people for political ambition'

Update : 08 Mar 2015, 08:23 AM

Accusing Khaleda Zia of burning people to death to fulfill her political ambitions, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called on all women in the country to be vocal and resist the heinous actions of the BNP chairperson.

The premier made the statement while addressing the inaugural function of International Women's Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Sunday afternoon.

"The BNP chairperson is burning people to death by enforcing hartals and blockades to gain her political ambitions. My question is who gave her [Khaleda] the right to kill the people of this nation by pouring petrol and hurling cocktails," she said.

Sheikh Hasina also said Begum Zia claims she was the prime minister three times and the opposition leader.

"But it is a matter of regret how a former prime minister and an opposition leader could burn people to death," she said.

The prime minister said politics is for the people and their welfare, not for burning them to death. But Begum Zia has been carrying out such misdeeds for over two months. "So I urge all, including all women in the country to be vocal about this and resist such brutality ... this cannot be allowed in any way. Khaleda Zia must be punished for her heinous actions," she said.

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs organised the function with State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki as chair.

The function was addressed by Secretary of the Ministry Tariq-ul Islam and Country Representative of United Nations Population Fund Argentina Matavel Piccin.

A documentary on the overall development of women in the country was also screened at the programme.
