BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday organised a doa mahfil at her Gulshan office to pay respect to the martyrs of the language movement, after she skipped her customary visit to Central Shaheed Minar in the early hours.
“The doa mahfil was held at the Gulshan office after Asr prayers, and the BNP chairperson was present there,” Khaleda’s Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told the Dhaka Tribune.
This is the first time after joining politics that Khaleda has skipped her customary visit to the Central Shaheed Minar on International Mother Language Day. She has been staying at her Gulshan office since January 3, demanding election under a non-partisan interim government.
To realise the demands, she has enforced a nationwide transport blockade programme from January 6 for an indefinite period.
Meanwhile, Khaleda’s Advisor Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, along with some BNP leaders and activists, placed floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar on behalf of the party yesterday morning.
Enam Ahmed said: “Begum Zia could not come to pay respect to the Language Martyrs because of the overall situation and security issues. We have placed a wreath on her behalf and another on behalf of the party.”
