Responding to claims that the government and the BNP-alliance are equally responsible for the country’s deadly impasse, the prime minister asked: “Why is civil society blaming me for the present political turmoil? It is not justified that civil society blames me and Khaleda Zia equally for the turmoil.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the remarks at a cabinet meeting yesterday. She said some people were blaming the government for the situation but said she could not comprehend why she was being held responsible for the 20-party alliance’s blockade.
“The country was functioning well before these problems were created. Why is civil society not talking about those who created the problem?”
“Civil society figures should form a committee to look into who is carrying out acts of terrorism in the name of hartals and the blockade,” Hasina said.
Instead of looking into the origin of disruptive politics and terror acts, civil society is pushing for dialogue, the premier said.
At the cabinet meeting, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, received support from cabinet colleagues for directives given to law enforcement agencies to secure the transport sector amid the transport blockade and hartals enforced by the BNP-led 20-party-alliance.
