Two ex-BNP MPs arrested

Update : 04 Feb 2015, 09:08 AM

Police have arrested two former BNP lawmakers Nazim Uddin and Ashraf Uddin Nizan from Motijheel area in Dhaka.

Motijheel OC Forman Ali told the Dhaka Tribune the BNP leaders were arrested on charges of carrying out subversive activities.

He said: "Police arrested the duo when they went to express solidarity with Krishak Sramik Janata League President Kader Siddique's sit-in programme in front of the party's Motijheel office around 2:30pm."

The BNP leaders are accused in several cases filed over sabotage, said the OC.

The BNP-led 20-party alliance has been observing countrywide roads and waterways blockade for indefinite period since January 5.

On top of the blockade, the opposition alliance enforced a 72-hour hartal since Sunday, which was later extended till Thursday.

Several leaders and activists of the BNP and its allies have been arrested for carrying out arson and vandalism and instigating violence during the blockade and hartal programmes.

At least 50 people have been killed in the nearly-a-month-long blockade and intermittent hartals enforced by the opposition alliance.

Hundreds of vehicles, including those belonging to law-enforcers, were burnt and attacked.

The BNP chairperson called the non-stop blockade on January 5 after she was barred from coming out of her Gulshan office.
