Jamaat-e-Islami has called 36 hours hartal from Saturday in eight districts of Rajshahi division in protest the killing of its activist Nurul Islam Shahin in police shootout early Wednesday.
Jammaat-e-Ameer of Rajshahi city unit Prof Dr Abul Hashem confirmed about the hartal which will start at 6am on Saturday and continue till 6pm Sunday.
Hashem also blamed that “police in cold blooded killed Shahin in the name of cross fire, so we called hartal protesting the killing.”
Deceased Nurul Islam Shahin, 45, was also a teacher of Islamia College of Rajshahi city and owner of Padma off-sheet printing press.
Rajshahi city unit Jamaat Secretary Jahangir Alam said Nurul was an activist of the party and former president of party's Ward No 30.
RMP Commissioner Muhammad Shamsudddin, however, claimed at the press briefing at Rajshahi district police headquarter around noon that Nurul Islam was injured in a "gunfight" with police early Wednesday.
"Later, he succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH)," he added.
The body, however, handed over to his relatives in the afternoon after autopsy at RMCH, confirmed RMP spokesman assistant commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam.
