A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrant against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a defamation case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Anwar Sadat issued the warrant after Paltan police station OC submitted a report in the case on Tuesday morning.
AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jononetri Parishad, a pro-Awami league organisation, filed the case against the duo for making derogatory remarks on Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In the case, AB Siddique claimed that Tarique Rahman has called the Awami League “black sheep party” and Sheikh Hasina “the leader of the black sheep.”
“He also defamed Bangabandhu by claiming that Ziaur Rahman was the country’s first president.”
“Mirza Fakhrul, on the other hand, distorted the history by saying that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman uttered Joy Pakistan in his historical speech of 7th March,” stated the AL leader.
Earlier on August 24, Tarique Rahman, at a seminar at Queen Mary University in London, said: “Sheikh Hasina is the leader of black sheep party.”
He also claimed that Ziaur Rahman was the first “legitimate” president of Bangladesh at another programme in London on September 1.
On the other hand, Fakhrul made his remarks at a mourning programme, marking the death anniversary of former finance minister M Saifur Rahman on September 5.
