'Police, RAB chiefs giving political statements'

Update : 17 Jan 2015, 01:19 PM

The BNP-led 20-party alliance has alleged that the chiefs of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) are giving political statements just like the politicians.

The opposition alliance made the allegation in a statement signed by BNP Vice Chairman Selima Rahman issued on Saturday, the 12th day of the ongoing countrywide blockade programme.

Claiming that all the partisan people have been appointed on the top positions of the law enforcement agencies, the statement said: "The inspector general of police and director general of RAB openly criticised the opposition in Rangpur on Friday. They also gave statements in favour of the ruling party's political agenda."

It stated that the BGB DG also threatened the activists of the alliance's ongoing movement.

"If the country had a representative government, these government officials would have been brought to book for violating discipline," the statement reads.

It said the role of newly appointed director general of RAB is more controversial and anti-people.

While addressing a press conference on Thursday, BGB Director General Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed said they decided to use lethal force, if necessary, on miscreants carrying petrol bombs, in an attempt to prevent the number of arson victims.

The BGB chief’s comments came as blockade-related violence, especially petrol bomb attacks, have so far claimed the lives of at least 25 people since the BNP-led 20-party alliance began its programme on January 6.

In a programme at Mithapukur in Rangpur on Friday, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque criticised BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia saying they had burned educational institutions before the January 5 election to stop the national poll.
