The police have detained 49 activists of the BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami from the seven upazilas of the district, in a move to avert further untoward situation during the ongoing blockade.
Officials at the concerned police stations said they were detained during a drive that began on Thursday night.
Among the detainees, 12 were detained from Sadar upazila, five from Sadullapur, 13 from Sundarganj, eight from Palashbari, four each from Govindaganj and Saghata, and three from Phulchhari.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mosharraf Hossain of the district said they had been detained, fearing the subversive activities.
After primary investigation, they would be produced before the court, he said.
