BNP calls hartal in Mymensingh for Tuesday

Update : 12 Jan 2015, 10:22 AM

The BNP has called a dawn-to-dusk general strike in the district for Tuesday, protesting the confinement of party chief Khaleda Zia.

Khaleda Zia has been kept under confinement since January 3 ahead of a party rally, marking “Democracy Killing Day.”

The district unit President of the party, AKM Mosharraf Hossain, made the announcement at a press meet on Monday afternoon.

District BNP General Secretary Abu Wahab Akand read out the written statement at the press conference.

According to the statement, the BNP has called the hartal in protest against the confinement of the party chief Khaleda Zia and filing of “false” cases against its Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.

The shut down has also been called, protesting the arrests of the leaders and activists of the party.

Tarique, from London, recently made various derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and history of Bangladesh.

Following his comments, a good number of cases were also filed in different courts and police stations across the country against Tarique and several arrest warrants were also issued against him.

The party has been observing non-stop nationwide roads and waterways blockade, protesting the confinement of Khaleda since January 5.

The law enforcers have arrested and detained several hundreds of leaders and activists of the party in order to keep the law and order situation of the country normal.

The relaxed blockade is being enforced by the BNP amid sporadic incidents of violence.
