Awami League rally has begun at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Monday afternoon marking Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s homecoming day on January 10.
The rally began at 2:30pm with the presence of thousands of leaders and activists of ruling Awami League and its associate organisations.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League President, attended the rally at 3:30pm, reports our correspondent from the spot.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya termed BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia the world great liar.
The next general election will not be held before 2019, the AL leader reiterated.
Earlier in the day, the ruling Awami League had obtained a conditional permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to hold the gathering.
The decision comes within a week of the police banning rallies and processions in Dhaka as the BNP and Awami League were set to hold major events on Jan 5 marking one year of the national election.
