At least two people have been killed and 30 others injured in a clash between the police and the members of BNP-Jamaat in Chaumuhani under Begumganj upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The deceased are shopkeeper Rubel, 30, and pedestrian Mohiuddin Baburchi, 32.
Officer-in-charge Ainul Haque of Begumganj police station confirmed the news to the Dhaka Tribune.
“At the time of the clash, BNP-Jamaat activists set ablaze at least five vehicles and vandalised several business establishments.”
Police and witnesses said activists of 20-party alliance brought out a procession at Rail Gate area around 5:15pm.
As the law enforcers barred them, they chased the police, vandalised different roadside establishments and set some vehicles ablaze.
They also torched two motorbikes of the police and My TV reporter Gias Uddin Mithu's bike.
They also fell electric pole to block the road.
Later, the police fired several blank shots to control the situation.
The clash left 30 people injured, six by bullet.
Of the injured, Rubel and Mohiuddin were declared dead when they were taken to Noakhali Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
The condition of another bullet-hit, Jahangir Alam, is stated to be critical.
A tense situation persisted in the area till filing the report.
Officer-in-Charge Ainul Haque of Begumganj police station said security have been beefed up in the area to avert further untoward situation.
BNP declared a day long hartal on Thursday in protest of the death, claiming Rubel as a Jubo Dal activist.
Harun-Ar-Rashid Azad, District unit BNP's secretary, declared the hartal.
