Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury has been suspended from his post.
Local Government division of the LGRD Ministry issued a circular in this regard on Wednesday.
Anamul Habib, chief executive officer of the city corporation, said: “The copy of the order reached at the office around 6pm. As per the circular, panel mayor 1 will be discharging his duty as acting Mayor.”
On December 30, a Habiganj court sent Ariful Haque to jail following the murder case of former finance minister Shah A M S Kibria.
Nine people including SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury were accused in the supplementary charge sheet in the Awmai League leader and former Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria.
According to the Local Government Act (city corporation) 2009 Section 12 Article: If charge sheet was accepted against Any City Corporations Mayor and councilors, the government may suspended him with consultation to the election Commission. Arif were suspended in this act.
