Update : 06 Jan 2015, 07:14 PM

After an unusual long gap of ten years, the much-awaited council of the district unit Awami League is going to be held today.

Panchagarh unit AL President advocate Nurul Islam Sujan disclosed outline of the programme in a press briefing held in the party office yesterday, saying a total of 155 councillors would select their leadership for the next three years.

AL General Secretary and also LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam was supposed to attend the programme as the chief guest while Presidium Member Kazi Zafrullah will inaugurate and local MP and also central committee Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury will present as main speaker.

In the event, Nurul Islam will preside over the programme going to be held on the premises of Panchagarh Sugar Mills. Centring the council the town has turned into a festive look as colourful banners and festoons of the candidates have been set up at different points of the town.

Besides, the council has become talks of the town when the local leaders, activists as well as ordinary people were seen enthusiastically discussing the matter at tea stalls, different public gatherings and places. On the other hand, all the candidates were on a door-to-door visit to convince the councillors to ensure vote for them. Even many candidates were holding meeting as well.

Party sources said existing president and also lawmaker from Panchagarh 2 constituency Nurul Islam may appear as lone candidate for the post while present General Secretary and also former Panchagarh 1 MP Mozaharul Haque Prodhan, Joint Secretary Abbas Ali, Publicity Secretary Abu Toyabur Rahman, Sadar upazila Chairman Anwar Sadat Samrat as well as Abu Sarwar Bokul and Advocate Mirza Sarwar Hossain will vie for the general secretary post.

Sources said most of the councillors want to elect a new leadership through ballot papers who would be able to restore the AL’s stronghold and image which lost during the last tenure.

The party lost three upazila chairman seats in Atwary, Tentulia and Boda, out of five upazlas, in the previous polls due to lack of integrated efforts by the party men.
