The police have detained nine leaders and activists of the BNP, raiding their houses in different areas of Tongi ahead on Friday's rally.
Of the detainees, three are-- Gazipur district unit Jubo Dal President Basir Uddin, 45, and activists Ijjat Ali, 55, and Roni Mia, 25.
BNP Joint Secretary Dr Mazharul Alam said: “The police have raided the houses of senior leaders of the party on Thursday night and picked up some party members.”
He claimed that Pubail union unit Jubo Dal President Harun-ar-Rashid and Badre Alam College unit Chhatra Dal activists Alamgir and Shishir were among the detainees.
The local administration have also taken strict security measures in order to secure full-proof security of the venue.
Five platoon police have been deployed there, Tongi police station duty officer Sajeda Lata told the Dhaka Tribune.
She said: “We have picked the nine BNP men up, raiding different places of Tongi in a bid to avert any untoward situation during the mass gathering.”
“We are suspecting that the BNP men will conduct subversive activities ahead of their programme.”
However, she did not disclose the identities of the detained BNP men.
