BNP's countrywide protest Thursday

Update : 24 Dec 2014, 11:51 AM

The BNP has announced a demonstration programme across the country, protesting "the attack on its members by the ruling party members."

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement while briefing the media immediately after the clash in the afternoon.

The party also held the government responsible for the clash between the ruling cadres and the opposition activists, truing the Bakshibazar-Chankarpool crossing into a battlefield on Wednesday.

Fakhrul said: “The government is responsible for the unrest at the Bakshibazar-Chankarpool crossing. The ruling party cadres attacked the gathering of our activists, who were standing there peacefully.”

“Our activists came up with the resistance in order to save themselves from the deadly attacks launched by the Awami League members.”

Earlier in the day, Bakshibazar-Chankarpool crossing turned into a battlefield when ruling cadres allegedly attacked a gathering of the opposition activists.

Members and activists of the main opposition, BNP and its student wing Chhatra Dal, had gathered ahead of the appearance of their party leader Khaleda Zia in a graft case relating to transactions of Zia Orphanage and Zia Charitable Trust, named after Khaleda's husband Ziaur Rahman, who founded BNP.

The BNP chief was scheduled to appear before a special court at Bakshibazar where she declined to appear a few times citing concerns over security.

The two clashing parties then chased each other around the area for some time breaking down into skirmishes.

Police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the activists and calm the situation down.

In the meantime some miscreants torched a private car of Netrokona MP Babu Chhabi Biswas near Dhaka Medical College Hospital's emergency wing.

The MP was also hurt in the attack. He is under treatment.
