Fakhrul: Judiciary more frightening than police

Update : 22 Dec 2014, 06:16 PM

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has termed the judiciary more terrifying than the police department.

A total of 8,000 cases against Awami League activists, and another 15 against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, across the country have been disposed of but the court to try BNP chief Khaleda Zia has been set up in a madrasa ground, said Fakhrul.

Addressing a council of the district unit of BNP in a local ground near the municipality yesterday, Fakhrul said the judiciary and the Election Commission had no independence.

“The government has destroyed the judiciary and the Election Commission. Impeachment act has been enacted against judges,” he said.

The BNP leader said Awami League had destroyed the country’s democracy and humanity had been endangered.

Claiming that no one voted in the January 5 general election and a total of 154 candidates won without facing any opposition, the BNP acting secretary general said it was a farce and a drama in the name of polls.

Fakhrul said no country in the world accepted the way the election was held.

He also sided with the party’s Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, saying that Awami League leaders were aggrieved at what Tarique had said in London on the basis of academic reference.

“If Awami League leaders think that Tarique had made mistakes, they should prove that by presenting concrete academic evidence. Instead, they are verbally attacking our chairperson and her son in an indiscriminate way,” said Fakhrul.

Vice-chairman of the BNP’s executive committee Advocate Harun Al Rashid inaugurated the council which was also addressed by several top leaders of the party.
