Update : 20 Dec 2014, 12:30 PM

Two BNP members have sustained injuries as the members of the Awami League and the BNP have scuffled in Haimchar over the upazila polls.

The injured are Algi union unit BNP Joint Convener Harun and activist Nojir.

Nojir has been admitted at Haimchar Upazila Health Complex while Harun has been sent Dhaka for some medical tests after receiving treatment at Chandpur Sadar Hospital, said duty doctor Biplob Das.

Locals said the Awami League and the BNP members engaged in an altercation at Chhoto Lakshmipur village under Algi union on Saturday afternoon over the upcoming upazila polls.

At one stage, the ruling party members reportedly started beating Harun and Nojir, leaving them injured.

Later, the BNP members chased the Awami League men and rescued the injured from the spot, said locals.

While contacted, Haimchar police station Officer-in-Charge Maniruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune: “We did not hear anything over the incident.”

The upazila election is scheduled to be held on December 23.
