BNP to seek permission for alternative venue to hold Nov 7 rally

Update : 04 Nov 2016, 06:05 PM

After Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) denied BNP to hold its rally in Suhrawardi Udyan on November 7, the party is seeking permission for an alternative venue to mark what it calls the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’.

“We will seek permission to hold the rally at an alternative venue. We expect to be permitted to hold the rally in elsewhere” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters on Thursday.

“The government has an undemocratic approach which is evident denying us to hold the rally at Suhrawardi Udyan,” he added.

Mirza Fakhrul spoke to the reporters after visiting the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Police refused to permit BNP to hold rallies at Suhrawardi Udyan on November 7 and 8.

“The permission was not given considering the security concerns as several parties have for rallies at the same venue”, said DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia on Thursday night.

BNP supporters claim that on November 7, 1975, amid political turmoil and unrest, soldiers and civilians jointly freed then Chief of Army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity which paved the way for Zia to come to power.

While BNP and its alliances celebrate November 7 as the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’, Awami League and its associate organisations consider it as the ‘Day of Killing of Freedom Fighters’.
