AL to observe January 5 as ‘Victory Day of Democracy’

Update : 12 Dec 2014, 07:23 PM

The ruling Awami League yesterday announced that it will observe the January 5 as the “Victory Day of Democracy”.

Terming the January 5 as the day for protection of  democracy, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said if the national polls would not have taken place on that day, the democracy of the country would have fellen  into a deep crisis.

He came up with the statement while addressing a press conference after a joint meeting of the party and its associate bodies at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office in the capital yesteray.

The meeting was organised to make plans and preparation for programmes to observe, on behalf of the party, the Martyred Intellectuals Day on December 14 and Victory Day on December 16.

The party’s senior leaders, including presidents and general secretaries of the associate bodies, were present at the meeting.

Hanif said: “The BNP-Jamaat alliance had  tried to stop the general polls on January 5, and  unleashed violence all over the country.”

“But, their violation against the democracy was not succeded. The election was held successfully. The Awami League won the polls and formed government again,” he said.

Due to the BNP led violations before and after the elections, panick gripped the country, he added.

The BNP-led 20 party alliance, however, has recently termed the January 5 as the “Black Day” and announced several programmes on that day.

Replying to questions from the journalists, Hanif said: “Our programmes in January are not to counter any programme of any party.”

The Awami League does not belive in conflict and violation with another party. The BNP can arreange their programmes freely, he said.

Earlier, the AL joint general secretary announced the party’s programmes for observing the Martyred Intellectuals Day on December 14, Victory Day of December 16 and

Bangabandhu’s hocomming day on January 10.

The party will celebrate the days by bringing out processions, colourful rallies in the capital as well as  in districts, upazilas and municipalities in the country.

AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam has asked leaders and activitists of the party and its all associated bodies, students wings and supporters to join the programmes to make those a success.

Meanwhile, the AL-led 14-party alliance on Thursday announced that the combine will hold rallies in the country’s upazila level from January 15 to 22 in protest at what it said a plot by the BNP-Jamaat alliance to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
