A Dhaka court yesterday indicted 13 BNP men including its Dhaka city unit convening committee’s Secretary Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and former Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku in a vandalism case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman passed the order after hearing a petition and also fixed March 10 to begin the trial with the deposition of witnesses in the case. The court also issued arrest warrant for five BNP men who did not appear before the court.
According to the case statement, the case was filed with the Ramna police station accusing the BNP men for vandalising vehicles, assaulting the police and preventing law enforcers from carrying out their duties on November 13, 2010, from a procession protesting the cancellation of the BNP chairperson’s cantonment house allotment. The accused are on bail in the case.
Ramna police station’s the then officer-in-charge, also the complainant of the case, was injured in the incident.
Deposition in vandalism case
Another Dhaka court yesterday recorded deposition against 43 BNP leaders and activists including Jubo Dal President Moazzam Hosain Alal, and leaders Saiful Islam Nirob, Azizul Bari Helal in a vandalism case filed under the speedy trial act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tarique Moinul Islam Bhuiyan partly recorded the deposition of complainant Sub-Inspector Idris Ali of Paltan police station and fixed January 6 for rest of the deposition in the case.
According to the case statement, the BNP men vandalised vehicles after bringing out a procession at the capital’s Bijoynagar on October 2, 2012.
On October 10 in the same year, the police submitted a charge sheet against the BNP men while the court framed the charges against them on June 30 this year. All of the accused are currently out on bail.
Charge framing hearing against 23 men
The charge framing hearing against 23 BNP leaders and activists, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party standing committee members Moudud Ahmed and Mirza Abbas, was partly held yesterday in a case filed for torching and vandalising vehicles in Shahjahanpur area on March 2 last year.
Earlier in the day, rejecting a time petition of BNP leader Moudud Ahmed, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tarique Moinul Islam Bhuiyan ordered him to appear before it by 4pm in connection with the vandalism case filed under the speedy trial act. Following the order, Moudud appeared before the court around noon.
After finishing a part of the charge framing hearing, the court fixed December 28 for rest of the hearing against the BNP men.
Twenty-two BNP men including Mirza Fakhrul and other party leaders – Mirza Abbas, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Amanullah Aman, Abdullah Al Noman and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel – appeared before the court yesterday while Mir Sharafat Ali Sopu was absent.
According to the case statement, Shahjahanpur police station filed the case against the 23 BNP men accusing them of obstructing the law enforcers from discharging their duties and vandalising vehicles in the capital’s Mouchak-Malibagh area on March 2, 2013, during a blockade programme by the BNP-led alliance.
