An activist of Jubo Dal, the youths wing of the BNP, was killed allegedly in a gunfight between police and his associates at Sadar upazila yesterday.
Police claimed that the deceased, Md Rony, 24, a member of the upazila unit Jubo Dal committee and son of Makbul Ahmed of Deopara village, was also a leader of the criminal gang Jisan Bahini.
Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Chandraganj police station, said a team of police raided the area in Latifpur village of the upazila on Monday midnight to arrest Jisan Bahini chief Jisan.
Sensing the presence of police, Jisan and his associates opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.
Jisan’s associate Rony was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while Jisan and other members of the gang managed to escape, the OC said.
Three police constables – Mohammad Ali, Ibrahim Sheikh and Projes Kanti Debnath – were also injured during the gunfight.
The police recovered a pistol and 12 bullets from the spot.
Meanwhile, district Jubo Dal President Rezaul Karim Liton claimed that police had arrested Rony from Contractor Bridge area under Chandraganj upazila in the afternoon.
Rony’s father also alleged that the police had picked up his son from his house at night and later shot him dead.
He claimed that Rony was a businessman in Chandarganj Bazar and not a member of the terrorist group.
