Chairman Abdul Haque was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital from Sirajganj Sadar Hospital yesterday evening, as his condition deteriorated.
Dr Akramuzzaman, residential medical officer of Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, said there was a severe injury on Abdul’s head, caused by a sharp weapon.
According to Sadar Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Babul Sheikh and Baruhas UP Chairman Moktar Hossain, a heated conversation took place between Abdul and Lawmaker Gazi MM Amzad Milon at the chairman’s office during the monthly meeting on law and order situation of the upazila.
At one stage of the argument, the lawmaker left the place, putting all the blames of spoiling the meeting on the chairman.
Soon after Milon left the place, several identified ruling party men, led by the Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Farhad Hossain, attacked Abdul and other local AL leaders at the office, being instigated by the lawmaker, alleged Babul and Moktar, who were present on the spot.
They also vandalised the office, they added.
Abdul and Shanjit had a conflict with Milon over filing general diaries (GD) against two UP chairmen and social and police harassment of some local Awami League leaders, according to local sources.
ATM Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tarash police station, said the GDs were filed against two UP chairmen over their involvement in beating and hampering social harmony.
Shanjit alleged that Milon has established a reign of terror in Tarash. “We have informed the district AL leaders of the incident,” said Shanjit.
However, soon after the incident, Milon told local reporters that he did not know who attacked the Awami League leaders.
“In the meeting, Babul and Moktar made objectionable comments about me. I left the meeting, as it was spoiled and went to my local office,” he added.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zillur Rahman and the OC visited Abdul, while he was at Sadar Hospital, said both of them.
