A number of advisers to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have suggested reorganising the party first and then wage a movement to compel the government to hold election under a non-partisan government.
They have suggested holding the meeting of the party’s national executive committee soon to rejuvenate party leaders and activists. However, many others have suggested otherwise – that holding the party council, which has been long due, might create division in the party.
Khaleda held the meeting with her advisers at her Gulshan office to analyse the current political situation of the country and devise the next course of action.
Seeking anonymity, one of the advisers told the Dhaka Tribune last night that Khaleda had listened to the party leaders and then asked them to work forgetting divisions and not to be misled by the government’s propaganda to spilt the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The adviser said Khaleda did not say anything specifically about Jamaat-e-Islami but she said the unity of the alliance was intact and no conspiracy would work. She also reportedly asked the advisers to carry out their responsibilities properly and consult her if there was any confusion.
She said she would discuss the suggestions in the party’s Standing Committee meeting and all would be informed of the decision the meeting takes.
The adviser suggested that the BNP chief complete the reorganising of the Dhaka city unit BNP soon to wage a movement.
Another adviser wishing anonymity said he suggested not making any whimsical decision about the movement right now as the government was instigating BNP leaders and activists to go for a violent movement.
This was her first meeting since the January 5 election resistance movement. The closed door meeting lasted more than one and a half hours.
The former premier is scheduled to hold a meeting with the vice-chairmen of the party today. She will hold a meeting of the Standing Committee, the highest policymaking body of the party, on November 13.
