37 BCL men sent to jail in Sylhet

A Sylhet court has sent 37 Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders, activists to jail after rejecting their bail pleas in an explosives case in Beanibazar Sadar upazilla of the district.

Judicial Magistrate Jerin Sultana passed the order when the accused surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case on Sunday.

The BCL men are: Abul Kasem Pollob, ex-joint secretary of BCL Beanibazar upazilla unit and ex vice-chairman of the upazilla parishad, BCL leaders and activists Masum Ahmed, Ajit Battachariya, Babul Ahmed, Amil Ahmed, Nasir Ahmed, Tofael Ahmed, Gius Uddin, Sajon Ahmed, Jafar Ahmed, Siddiqur Rahman, Kawser Ahmed, Imon Uddin, Emdad Ahmed, Mannan Miah, Rahel Ahmed, Kanon Ahmed, Rabbi Hossain, Shamim Ahmed, Pulok Das, Saju Miah, Mizan Uddin, Ripon, Himel Ahmed, Sumon Ahmed, Tareq Ahmed, Badrul Islam, Manjur Miah, Ramjan Ali, Reza Ahmed, Rajon Ahmed, Emdad Hossain, Sumon Ahmed Jamal, Sagor and Almas.

Advocate Rezaul Karim, the defence counsel, filed bail petition for the accused, but the court denied the bail petition after hearing.

On September 15, two factions of BCL led by its ex-convener Jamal Ahmed and joint convener Jamal Ahmed locked into clashes, leaving 10 injured including the officer-in-charge of Beanibazar police station.

Sub Inspector Mizanur Rahman lodged a case against Pollob and 52 of his associates under explosives act.
