JSD’s role in Bangladesh’s politics questioned

Update : 08 Nov 2014, 08:58 PM

Dhaka University Professor MM Akash has questioned the role that the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, brainchild of Liberation War hero Col (retd) Taher, have played in the country’s politics over the years.

“The Awami League was JSD’s political enemy once. But now they are coalition partners. JSD used to talk about scientific socialism, but that cannot be heard from them anymore. The party once looked to bring a radical change to the society, but today they have adopted a slow and steady approach,” Prof Akash said.

Addressing a programme at the TSC roundabout on the DU campus yesterday, Prof Akash also said it was now hard to understand whether the Awami League was using JSD for serving its political purposes or vice versa.

JSD President and Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu was present at the programme when he made the remarks.

In reply, minister Inu said his party got tagged with the Awami League because they both were fuelled by the spirit of independence and thus they believed that they could bring the social change.

Since the JSD had never participated in any military government or partnered with any anti-liberation force, Inu said there was no reason to think that the party had deviated from its basic ideologies.
