The procedure of holding Zila Parishad election is contrary to the fundamental matters of the constitution, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam has claimed.
He made the claim while talking to the journalists at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka on Sunday after holding the meeting with the high-ups of 20-party alliance, reports Bangla Tribune.
The decision on participation in the Zila Parisad polls will come from the meeting with the chiefs of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, said Fakhrul.
The secretary generals of the 20 parties took part in the meeting.
On October 6 last, the Zila Parishad (Amendment) Bill, 2016, was passed in the parliament to remove some ambiguities from the Zila Parishad Act, 2000 and clarifying about the formation of ‘electoral college’ with public representatives from all tiers for Zila Parishad election.
As per the amended act, only the elected representatives of local government bodies will take part in the polling to elect Zila Parisad chairman and members.
