Update : 02 Nov 2014, 07:24 AM

Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 24-hour countrywide hartal in protest against the tribunal’s verdict that handed down death penalty to its leader Mir Quasem Ali for committing crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation War.

Jamaat's acting ameer Mokbul Ahmed issued a statement on Sunday afternoon, immediately after the verdict was pronounced.

The party will also observe a countrywide prayer programme on Tuesday and a demonstration on Wednesday protesting the verdict.

Earlier in the day Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali has been sentenced to death for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The tribunal 2 has handed down death penalty to war criminal Mir Kashem on the charges 11 and 12 for killing seven people, including one Jasimuddin, after abduction.
