Jamaat-Shibir men on the rampage

Unruly supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chattra Shibir went on the rampage in the capital and some other parts of the country yesterday protesting the verdict that awarded death penalty to party Chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.

The unruly activists as a part of protest vandalised vehicles, blasted crude bombs and brought out brisk processions.

In the capital Jamaat-Shibir tried to bring out processions at Gulshan, Mirpur 10, Mugda, Motijheel while they blasted crude bombs at Rampura and vandalised at least a dozen of vehicles in Jurain area.

In Jurain Rail Gate area Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession around 2pm and vandalised over 12 vehicles parked there. Before police rushed to the spot they fled away, according to a witness.

“We have arrested two Jamaat-Shibir men while they were trying to bring out procession soon after the verdict at Gulshan 1 intersection around 2:30pm,” Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gulshan police station, said.

“Police in Motijheel area arrested one Shibir man and four from Mugda area in the afternoon while they were planning to bring out a procession,” says Anowar Hossain, deputy commissioner of police of Motjheel Division.

Jamaat-Shibir men also blasted a crude bomb at Polashbagh of Rampura around 1pm but no one was injured, said Mahbub Alam Tarafdar, OC of Rampura.

Besides,  Jamaat-Shibir men exploded 10-15 home-made bombs near Central Law College at Bijoynagar simultaneously around 6:25 pm. However, there was nor report of casualty from the bomb blasts.

Jamaat-Shibir men also burnt tires on the roads in the area to create obstacle to vehicular movements. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Morshed Alam, officer-in-charge of Paltan police station.

“Police picked up a total of 10 Jamaat-Shibir men from across the capital yesterday,” said Masudur Rahman, DC (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Our Sylhet correspondent reports: Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised at least 20 vehicles and engaged in a chase and counter chase with Chhatra League activists around 1pm in the city’s court point area as the ruling party members tried to resist them from organising a procession.

Rahmat Ullah, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said: “Being informed, police rushed in and fired rubber bullets and tear shells to take the situation under control.” No report of injuries or arrests were reported.

Our Satkhira correspondent reports: Police in a special drive have arrested 13 leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-Shibir from five upazilas of Satkhira.

“Police conducting the drive in Tala, Debhata, Kaliganj, Shamnagar and Sadar Upazila made the arrest,” said Syed Modasser Ali, additional police super of Satkhira.

“All of them were sent to Satkhira district Jail,” he said.

Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports: Police arrested 86 people – 30 from chapainawabganj Sadar, 22 from Shibganj, 22 from Nachol, eight from Gomostapur and four from Bholahat – from five upazilas of the district, said Bashir Ahmed, police super of the district.

Our Sunamganj correspondent reports: Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession at Kalibari intersection around 3pm that paraded different roads of the Sunamganj town.
