Jatiya Party (JaPa) chief HM Ershad yesterday said there is no democracy in the country, calling it a one-party system.
The “democracy” that exists in the country does not accommodate all parties. It accommodates only one party, he said at a views exchange meeting with Jatiya Sromik Party held at Banani in the capital.
The incidents, like murders, disappearance and road accidents, were taking place and being reported in the media everyday, Ershad said.
“But this situation is not improving. Nor does the government have any headache about it,” he said, adding: “The country cannot be run in this way.”
Criticising both the BNP and the Awami League, the JaPa chief said both of the major parties were passing busy hours about going to state power, not taking a blind bit of notice of what were on the other hand happening in the country.
“I had kept the population growth under control in the country. But now this growth rate is high,” he said.
“However, our prime minister had said the population would be turned into power,” the JaPa chief said, pointing out that the population cannot be turned into power without establishing industries and thus jobs for them in the country.
“We promised to people to ensure job for all, but now every home has jobless people,” he said.
People were going abroad illegally for jobs risking their lives, said Ershad, because there were no adequate number of jobs in the country.
